Position Title: ReClaim It Assistant Store Manager
Pay Scale: $20 per hour.
Hours: 20 hours per week.
Thurs - Friday 1:30–5:30, Sat - Sun 11:30-5:30

Position Description

ReClaim It (“the store”- RCI) is a retail store operated by Cracked Pots, Inc., (CP) a non-profit environmental arts organization devoted to waste reduction. The store sells objects and materials diverted from the waste stream to inspire people to reuse and reimagine them. 

The Assistant Manager is responsible for supporting ReClaim It store operations by rotating, pricing, and merchandising gleaned and donated inventory. The Assistant Manager will also directly supervise up to 3 Reuse Sales Associates and will work closely with the Store Manager to help ensure smooth day to day operations in the retail store.

This position requires self-motivation, flexibility, initiative, problem solving and creativity. The Assistant Manager will need good communication and organizational skills, attention to detail, computer fluency, an outgoing personality, and a commitment to waste reduction. A cooperative work ethic is essential.

This position reports directly to the Store Manager.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Store Operations

  • In the absence of the Store Manager, assume all responsibilities in the day to day operations of the retail store including opening and closing, payment handling, customer assistance and answering the phone.

  • Oversee the sales floor and make sure all staff and volunteers comply with current store policies

  • Keep point of sale hardware and software in working order, and up to date. Ensure the front register area is clean and functional.

Staff Management

  • Together with the Store Manager, ensure that established pricing and cashiering policies and procedures are carried out by all staff and volunteers.

  • Provide leadership, supervision, and direction to all Reuse Sales Associates and any merchandising volunteers working on the sales floor and assist the Store Manager in recruiting, hiring and training sales staff.

  • Assume primary responsibility for staffing the retail store. Ensure that the sales floor is adequately staffed during open hours either by regular staff members or board member volunteers. Fill in as cashier in case of illness or other absence. Communicate staff scheduling concerns promptly to the Store Manager.

  • Mentor merchandising volunteers working in front of the store and work with coordinator staff to ensure all volunteers have a productive and positive experience.

  • Ensure that all volunteers and staff are aware and mindful of the importance of honoring diversity, equity, and inclusion principles at all times - at the store and when representing  ReClaim It. Hold all accountable if their behavior is inappropriate, offensive, or insensitive.

Inventory Management and Merchandising

  • Ensure smooth flow of “floor ready” priced merchandise from back to front.

  • Coordinate changes to store displays as needed, adjust displays when large items sell and make room for new items.

  • Ensure merchandise is displayed safely and aisles are kept clear and navigable. Make sure prices are clearly marked – whether individually priced or bulk priced.

Customer Service

  • Explain the mission and purpose of ReClaim It to customers, thank each customer for their purchase and invite them back. 

  • Be aware of current store inventory and recently gleaned or donated incoming materials to better assist customers in their shopping experience.

  • Provide guidance on materials, pricing and availability to help customers make informed purchases that support ReClaim It’s goals.

  • Communicate all customer concerns, suggestions and other feedback to the Store Manager.

Administrative Duties

  • Communicate all staff related absences, planned and otherwise, promptly to the Store Manager. Complete and submit timesheets in a timely manner.

  • Provide monthly store reports, including sales and consignment reports, to the Store Manager.

Communicate and work cooperatively with staff to ensure everyone can contribute to the success of ReClaim It. Be flexible with different duties/tasks depending on need in an ever-changing work environment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

The ideal candidate for this position will have:

  • Good analytical and math skills to create and analyze reports, sales statistics and spreadsheets.

  • Strong customer service skills since this is a customer-oriented job.

  • Excellent leadership skills and ability to work with teams.

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills towards customers, staff members, volunteers and store managers.

  • Great attention to detail for purposes of erecting attractive marketing displays, arranging merchandise and maintaining store appearance.

  • Ability to lift heavy merchandise (up to 30 pounds), walk and stand for long hours.

  • A commitment to waste reduction and creative reuse and familiarity with the mission and vision of ReClaim It.

  • At least 1 year verifiable experience in direct supervision of employees, preferably in a retail environment.

  • Experience working with a non profit; preferred but not required.

  • Experience with, or knowledge of, second hand/thrift store pricing and selling strategies.

  • Capability and willingness to work in an environment that may include dirt, dust, and mold.
